A Saturday Family Re-Do for Small Frictions

By Saturday, a family may be carrying several small moments that did not go well: a rushed instruction, a sharp reply, a toy grabbed without asking, or a plan that changed suddenly. Repair does not require a long family meeting. One calm “re-do” can show that a difficult moment is not the only version available.

Try a five-minute family re-do

This practice suits many children aged about 4–12. Choose one small, recent moment—not a frightening event or an issue that needs professional support. Adults can begin so the activity does not become a lesson aimed only at the child.

  1. Name what happened: “I called from across the room and became impatient.”
  2. Name what was needed: “I needed us to leave on time, and you needed a clearer warning.”
  3. Try the next version: “In five minutes we are leaving. Would you like to carry your bag or hold my hand?”

A younger child may act out the re-do with toys or choose between two sentences. An older child can suggest wording that feels more respectful. Do not force an apology, eye contact or disclosure. The goal is to practise one safer response while keeping reasonable boundaries.
