A Five-Minute Homework Landing Pad for Monday Evenings
Monday homework can begin with everyone already tired. A child has spent the day following instructions, while a parent may be moving between dinner, bags, messages and tomorrow’s plans. “Start your homework” can quickly become a tug-of-war, even when both people want the same thing: a calmer evening.
Before focusing on the work itself, try creating a five-minute landing pad. This is a practical family routine, not a promise that every homework session will become easy.
The five-minute homework landing pad
This activity suits children aged 5–12. Adapt the choices to your child’s age, communication needs and school expectations.
- Minute one: offer water, a simple snack if appropriate, or two quiet minutes.
- Minute two: place only the materials needed for the first task on the table.
- Minute three: ask, “Would you like to begin with the shortest task or the most familiar one?”
- Minutes four and five: stay nearby while your child reads the first instruction and chooses one starting action.
If your child says, “I can’t,” try replacing pressure with a smaller next step: “Let’s find the first thing the question asks.” If the work is regularly confusing or distressing, contact the teacher rather than turning home support into a nightly battle.
